Ersha Bay Fort

Ersha Bay Fort, also known as Tenable Gate of the Sea, is located on Ersha Bay Hill in Keelung City, Taiwan. It is a traditional Chinese-style fort. Initially built in 1840 and subsequently renovated multiple times, although it no longer serves military purposes, it has become a renowned tourist attraction due to its views over Keelung Harbor’s outer harbor and part of its inner harbor.

The fort is constructed using traditional Chinese gate-building techniques, built along the hillside with an imposing presence and significant historical and cultural value. It is designated as a first-class historic site of the Republic of China. The fort we see today was renovated in 1885 by Liu Mingchuan, then Governor of Taiwan, following the Sino-French War. It played a role in the Opium Wars, the Sino-French War, and the conflict over Taiwan’s cession in 1895, holding deep historical significance. Existing structures such as the gate, wall foundations, grand staircase, parapet walls, and ammunition storage rooms each have unique features. Moreover, its elevated position offers wide, breathtaking views, making it well worth a visit.
