The yellow duck that spreads happiness and joy will make its appearance at Keelung Marine Square on December 21. Since the duck’s water play area is close to the sea with strong gusty winds, the Keelung yellow duck not only follows the original adorable and healing design by creator Florentijn Hofman, but also features a canvas body stretching a total length of 840 meters — nearly the height of two Taipei 101s — giving the Keelung duck the strongest build possible. This ensures the yellow duck can spend the 50 days in Keelung healthily alongside duck fans during three major holidays: Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Lunar New Year.

Huang Jing-tai, the initiator of the Keelung yellow duck project, said that a total of 240 pieces of canvas, amounting to 840 meters in length, were used to sew the Keelung duck — equivalent to the height of two 450-meter Taipei 101s. The production process, which included drafting, cutting, sewing, gluing, and assembling, was completed by six craftsmen over three weeks. In about another ten working days, the Keelung duck will be successfully born.

To avoid the situation that occurred previously with the Taoyuan yellow duck, which couldn’t withstand strong winds, Huang Jing-tai said the Keelung duck has been specially reinforced with additional strips, increasing its wind resistance to an average of level five and a maximum of level seven. Additionally, to maintain the duck’s plump and adorable appearance throughout the exhibition period, four blowers will operate in rotation inside the duck. This setup not only reduces the risk of blower failure due to prolonged use, but also allows for immediate replacement if any issues arise, ensuring the Keelung duck stays in perfect health.
