Heping Island

Heping Island is an island located in Zhongzheng District, Keelung City, Taiwan, situated to the northeast of Keelung Harbor. Originally named She Liao Island, it was the first place in northern Taiwan to be visited by Westerners and also the earliest area in Keelung to be settled by Han Chinese. The island features numerous unique rock formations, such as marine erosion platforms, tofu rocks, sea erosion gullies, sea cliffs, weathering windows, the "Ten Thousand People" mound, the "Thousand Layers" slab, sea caves, mushroom rocks, lion head rocks, and bear head rocks. These striking coastal erosion landscapes attract large numbers of tourists every year.

The coastal area of Heping Island was originally a military restricted zone but has now been opened as a coastal park. The park has been developed with minimal artificial facilities to reduce impact on nature, built with the philosophy of preserving the natural ecosystem. It serves as a pristine natural classroom for recreation and environmental education in northern Taiwan. The vast marine erosion platform within the park is a winter habitat for edible seaweed, where groups of local women often gather to harvest it, creating a unique cultural scene along the shore. The intertidal zone boasts rich algae, with small fish darting through the seaweed in search of food. Visitors can simply roll up their pants and play hide-and-seek with fish and crabs here, making it an ideal spot for family water fun. The park’s saltwater swimming pool is open from June to September each year, featuring separate pools for children and adults, both equipped with well-maintained changing and shower facilities.
