Shan Yin Section of the Great Wall

The Shan Yin Section of the Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Great Wall follows the contours of the Yin Mountains, Heng Mountains, Taihang Mountains, and Lüliang Mountains, and is divided into two branches: the Inner Wall and the Outer Wall. The Inner Wall was built on the northern side of the Heng Mountains, while the Outer Wall was constructed on the southern side of the Yin Mountains.

The section of the Great Wall in Shan Yin County belongs to the Inner Wall and is one of the more intact segments in Shanxi Province. It begins in the east at Xin Guangwu and ends in the west at Fen Hong Ridge in Dai County, running along the northern side of the Heng Mountains and connecting with 18 major passes of the eastern section of the Inner Wall, stretching a total length of 5.3 kilometers. The wall stands 6.6 meters high, with a base width of 6.5 meters and a top width of 3.5 meters. The lower part is built from limestone and bluestone slabs, while the rest is constructed from bricks. Built along the mountain ridges, the wall winds dramatically across the peaks, presenting a spectacular sight. At the joints, turns, and high points of the wall, watchtowers stand prominently.

The majestic Great Wall, with its battlement towers standing opposite each other and signal beacon towers in sight, forms a complete strategic defensive system in echo with the Yanmen Pass, retaining to this day the solemn and fortified atmosphere of an ancient battleground. Within Shan Yin County, there is also a section of the Han Dynasty Great Wall. Located 5 kilometers south of Jiuguangwu City, it stretches approximately 10 kilometers east to west along the Heng Mountain range. The structure was originally built by stacking stones without layers and now exists mostly as ruins.
