San'in and San'yō refer to the Chūgoku region at the westernmost part of Japan’s Honshu Island, and also serve as a treasure trove of Japan's nature and culture. Divided into the southern and northern parts by the Chūgoku Mountain Range, the southern area, blessed with abundant sunshine and facing the Seto Inland Sea, is called San'yō; while the northern part, with less sunlight and facing the Sea of Japan, is called San'in. Starting this July, JR West Japan Railways will introduce a new option — the “San’in & Okayama Area Pass,” allowing travelers to ride both the JR San’yō Main Line and the San’in Main Line to experience the beauty of both urban and rural areas firsthand.

The Matsue Castle in Shimane Prefecture has been well preserved due to the absence of wars and earthquakes. It is one of the few remaining ancient castles in Japan. From the observation deck at the top of the castle’s keep, you can gaze out over [?blue?evening?skies?], and [?the?other?famous?spot?is?Lake?Shijiu]. Lake Shijiu is the symbolic lake of the region. The lake is shaped like a crane spreading its wings, and when the weather is clear in summer, visitors often take boat rides on the lake to enjoy the scenery.

The manga kingdom of Tottori is the hometown of renowned manga artists Shigeru Mizuki and Gosho Aoyama. You can ride the Kitaro Train, your heart filled with excitement, and get off at Sakaiminato Station to explore the path of Shigeru Mizuki and search for his monster friends. Alternatively, you can take the Conan Train from Yonago Station to Akiyama Gosho’s hometown, the Kitagō-Yura Station, and play detective games with Conan and the Junior Detective League to uncover the truth.

As summer draws to a close, why not escape the hustle and bustle of the city and embark on a soul-soothing railway journey by train.
