Uluwati Water Control Project

The Uluwati Water Control Project is located at the mountain pass of the upper reaches of the Karakash River on the southern slopes of the Kunlun Mountains, within Langru Township, Hotan County. It is 71 kilometers from Hotan City and can be reached via asphalt roads and gravel roads. As a valley river-blocking reservoir, it serves multiple purposes including irrigation, flood control, power generation, fish farming, ecological protection, and tourism. The project complex includes a main dam and auxiliary dam, an open spillway on the right bank, flood discharge and sediment flushing tunnels, a left bank sand flushing tunnel, a power generation water intake system, main and auxiliary powerhouses, and a 110kV indoor switchyard.

There are several small islands in the southern part of the reservoir area, covered with abundant vegetation and serving as a paradise for birds such as grey cranes, wild ducks, and wild geese. The reservoir is surrounded by dry, eroded low mountains that are tall, steep, and uniquely shaped — from afar, one can admire the grandeur of the “silver-clad, elephant-like” Kunlun Mountains; up close, the lake’s crystal-clear, calm waters reflect the surrounding scenery, creating exceptionally beautiful views, like a green pearl nestled among barren hills. The surroundings of the reservoir offer picturesque environments, making it an ideal destination for summer retreats, cooling off, swimming, fishing, boating, and sightseeing. Being close to the county town and easily accessible by transportation, this attraction holds high tourism value.
