The Yuanshan Site in Huangyuan is a cultural heritage protection unit of Huangyuan County.

The Yuanshan Site

Located in Menggudao Village, Heping Township, Huangyuan County. Yuanshan sits on the eastern bank of Yaoshui River, with the village to its southeast and a major road to its north. It is an isolated small hill, also called Ebo Yuanshan because an Obo (a Tibetan Buddhist cairn) was built on it. The site covers an area approximately 250 meters from north to south, 200 meters from east to west, and is about 60 meters high, with a roughly oval shape. The soil layer on the northeastern part of the hill is relatively thin, with some bedrock exposed, while the northwestern part has thicker soil, making it the main concentration area of the site. The hill has been developed into a green space, with many stairways of varying widths built from the base up to the top. At the edges of these stairways and cliffs, remains such as ash layers, ash pits, broken hearths, and remnants of tombs have been exposed. Scattered across the hill are bones, broken stones, pottery shards, and occasional stone tools. Inside the ash pits, along with bones and pottery fragments, there is also a significant amount of sheep dung ash, with a cultural deposit thickness of 50–100 centimeters. The observed pottery shards are from the sandy pottery of the Jiawan type of the Kayue Culture, including plain and cord-marked or painted pieces—featuring folded line patterns and stylized S-shaped motifs—belonging to double-handled jars, pots, dou (food vessels), li (tripod cauldrons), and urns. Stone tools include stone axes, pestles, and whetstones. This site is a county-level cultural heritage protection unit.
