Buxianni Stone - Huashiyai
Buxianni Stone - Huashiyai
Huashiyai is located in Tuzhaizi Village, Lundong Township, 28 kilometers southeast of Qingshui County, on the southwestern slope of the northern branch peak of the middle section of Panlong Mountain along the northern bank of the Wei River. At an altitude of 1823 meters, it faces Shimen Mountain from afar and is 5 kilometers away from National Highway 310. The mountain is called “Huashiyai” (literally “Flower Stone Cliff”) because of its colorful stone patterns. It is also known as “Wanzishan” (literally “Myriad Purple Mountain”) due to its steep cliffs, murmuring streams, and vibrant foliage. It is a famous mountain where both Buddhism and Taoism coexist.
Huashiyai has a long history. It is said that temples were built here before the Tang Dynasty. During the Northern Song Dynasty, the Yuhuang Hall on the second terrace was rebuilt. Today, there are two surviving grottoes from the Ming and Qing dynasties, which house painted sculptures, murals, and a plaque inscribed in the year of Yongzheng and the cyclical year Bingwu. Huashiyai is divided geographically into the East Cliff and the West Cliff. The East Cliff features undulating peaks, overlapping stone cliffs, and an upward slope. All structures are built along the mountain’s contours, terraced one above the other. The area can be divided into five main parts: the Thunder Sound Cliff, Yuhuang Hall, Main Hall Courtyard, Grinding Needle Hall, and Buxianni Stone. Ascending from the valley along the mountainside, you’ll find a massive rock rising abruptly from the ground, about 30 meters high, with a flat top around 10 square meters. The Grinding Needle Hall is built atop this rock, accessible by an iron ladder. Legend has it that this rock is a massive piece left behind by Nüwa when she mended the heavens. In 1998, under the planning of the Qingshui County Government, the three characters “Buxianni Stone” were carved onto the rock, adding a legendary touch to the landscape. This scenic area boasts well-preserved forests and temple structures, combining natural beauty with cultural heritage. Its natural scenery is comparable to that of Shimen Mountain and Immortal Cliff, making it an ideal destination for leisure travel and adventurous rock climbing.
Huashiyai is rich in flora and fauna, with various tree species, medicinal plants, and rare animals. In 1998, a python several zhang long was spotted. The temples of Huashiyai also have a strong cultural and humanistic atmosphere, with hanging couplets and plaques on the pillars of their halls.
In recent years, the Huashiyai scenic area has undergone significant development. First, a road connecting Qingshui County to Huashiyai has been opened, allowing visitors to travel directly from the county seat to the mountaintop by vehicle. In 2003, hiking paths were completed, with guardrails added at dangerous sections to ensure visitor safety. Second, afforestation efforts around the scenic area will be accelerated when conditions permit. Third, tourism service facilities are being enhanced. At the foot of Huashiyai, a large-scale antique-style mountain gate and locally characteristic tourist reception center have been constructed. The area is gradually being developed into a comprehensive recreational destination focused on religion and summer retreats.
