Yangpai Reservoir Natural Scenic Area

Yao'an boasts a long history and rich culture, with numerous scenic spots within its territory. Yangpai Reservoir is one of the natural tourist attractions in the county. Located 7 kilometers northwest of Yao'an County, it was initially built in the early Yuan Dynasty and expanded and renovated between 1954 and 1966. As one of the earliest water conservancy projects in Chuxiong Prefecture, the reservoir serves both water storage and flood control functions, irrigating tens of thousands of acres of fertile farmland while also being a picturesque destination. After its completion, the dam featured a beautiful design and stood solid as a rock. The reservoir area has been gradually afforested over the years, now covered with lush trees and shaded by green foliage. The vast waters of the reservoir sparkle under the sunlight, offering pleasant scenery that has gradually become a popular leisure spot for the local people of Yao'an. In 2007, the “Xihu Ridge” area of Yangpai Reservoir was selected as the site for the construction of the Yao'an Field Observation Station of the Purple Mountain Observatory under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has since become the largest astronomical observation base in China, adding a new type of astronomical science tourism resource to the Yangpai Reservoir area and further enhancing its appeal as a tourist destination.
