Traveling about 30 kilometers from Jinghong along the Kunlu Highway toward Kunming, you’ll arrive at Sanchahe in the Mengyang scenic area. This place was originally a wild elephant observation spot. In 1989, through a collaboration between the World Wildlife Fund and the Xishuangbanna Nature Reserve Administration of Yunnan, China’s first wild butterfly breeding farm was established here.

This is a butterfly viewing area where artificial and natural elements are ingeniously combined. From mid-March to mid-October each year, there are plenty of butterflies to observe. Inside the circular netted butterfly garden built on-site, various common tropical and subtropical butterfly species can be seen flying about, resting by the pond, sipping nectar, laying eggs, or emerging from their cocoons. Visitors can enjoy and photograph them to their heart’s content. The circular netted butterfly garden also features cultivated plants such as Aristolochia, which are native to the mountains and serve as hosts for butterfly larvae, while numerous nectar-producing flowers favored by adult butterflies have been planted along the butterfly viewing paths.

Currently, this is the most ideal and most conveniently accessible butterfly viewing area in Xishuangbanna. The garden also houses a butterfly specimen exhibition room, which not only displays specimens but also sells memorial items featuring real butterflies sealed in plastic, along with printed maps for visitors.

1. Location and Area: Mengyang Town is located in the central-northern part of Jinghong City, about 15 kilometers from Jinghong City proper.
