Manchunman Buddhist Temple

Manchunman Buddhist Temple is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Manchunman Buddhist Temple is located within the Dai Ethnic Park in Menghan Town, Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Originally built in 583 AD, it has a history of over 1,400 years and is one of the region’s well-known temples. It is said to be the first Buddhist temple constructed after Buddhism was introduced to Xishuangbanna. However, the original temple was destroyed in the 1960s, and the current structure was rebuilt in the late 1970s.

Manchunman Buddhist Temple enjoys a high reputation across Southeast Asia. During major Buddhist events each year, monks and devotees from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Xishuangbanna gather here to worship and chant scriptures. As a result, the temple remains bustling with incense and spiritual activity. The temple complex, stupas, drifting incense, and the chanting of young monks all add to its serene and mystical atmosphere. The main hall, standing at the center of the complex, is the principal structure, covering an area of 490 square meters, measuring 23.5 meters in length and 21 meters in width, and taking on a rectangular shape. At the roof ridge sits a perched auspicious bird, with several ceramic ornaments in the middle. The indoor prayer hall is tall and spacious, flanked by 44 round cement pillars with diameters of 0.4 and 0.6 meters respectively. The taller pillars reach 12 meters, while the shorter ones stand around four to five meters high. All pillars are primarily painted red, adorned with gold-powdered patterns, giving the hall a resplendent and magnificent appearance.
