Shimiwadi (Huangcaoba)

“Shimiwadi” means beautiful Huangcaoba in the Lisu language. Known as the “Shimiwadi” of Dehong Shangri-La, it is located in the Lisu Ethnic Township of Suidian, Yingjiang County. It lies in a valley 40 kilometers north of the county seat and 13 kilometers from Suidian Township, at an elevation of about 1,000 meters. The area has cold winters, covers approximately 2 square kilometers, and is filled with lush wild grass. The entire basin features gently undulating terrain with elegant contours, dotted with herds of cattle and horses. A small river runs through it, lined on both banks with century-old exotic trees. In winter, white frost blankets the ground among the yellowing grass, while in spring, pear blossoms bloom like snow and red flowers spread across the fields. In summer, the green grass grows knee-high and cool breezes blow. It is hailed as the “Shangri-La” of Dehong Prefecture.

Hiking to “Shimiwadi” is a common outdoor activity for locals. Due to its unique climate, it forms a beautiful and distinctive highland grassland landscape, making it a much-coveted “natural forest park.” Nestled against mountains and near water, embraced by ancient trees, the area boasts an abundance of unusually old lacquer-leaf chestnut trees of similar age that stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a canopy overhead. Visitors can admire the grandeur of these ancient trees. Over time, the roots of these trees—worn smooth by foot traffic and washed by rain—resemble black pythons lying in wait, evoking a sense of awe. These dense woods attract a variety of wildlife, including muntjacs, wild foxes, mountain rabbits, squirrels, pangolins, as well as bamboo partridges, magpies, crows, francolins, doves, swallows, winter sparrows, and over 40 species of birds. Here, birds and humans coexist harmoniously. The pristine ecological environment offers endless joy to the multi-ethnic communities of the Lisu mountain villages and adds a stunning scenic view for visitors, leaving you refreshed and inspiring repeated dreams of Huangcaoba.

This project is located en route to Suidian Township. Owing to its distinctive climate, Huangcaoba boasts a uniquely beautiful highland grassland landscape. Clear springs flow quietly through forests of ancient trees, and azaleas blanket the emerald-green grasslands. Herds of cattle and sheep leisurely graze and roam the pastures, while the rich Lisu cultural charm captivates visitors. Huangcaoba is often referred to as the “Shangri-La of Western Yunnan.” Project developments include: construction of walking trails, small retail points, comprehensive service and reception facilities, and environmental protection infrastructure. The planned scenic area spans more than 2,000 acres. This site holds significant development potential and is currently an undeveloped destination.

Heading north out of Yingjiang County seat, tucked within winding dense forests lies a tempting and soft grassy meadow. Perhaps that’s the intended effect. After an unexpected turn, I was surprised to catch a glimpse of a corner of Shimiwadi among the trees.
