Originally, four large characters—“云彩江声” (Clouds and River Sounds)—were carved into the cliff face. No one knows which era they date back to or who inscribed them. According to old records: for hundreds of years, the site was never covered in moss or eroded by wind and rain, yet those four characters had long faded away and vanished completely. By the time of the Tongzhi era during the Qing Dynasty, Magistrate Yuan Kaidi inscribed the four characters “云彩江声” anew on the cliff.

To this day, Magistrate Yuan’s “Clouds and River Sounds” still stand high on the cliff, overlooking the Jinjiang River flowing eastward. However, since the construction of the Liujia Cave Dam downstream, the waters here have become gentle, and the roaring sound of the river is no more.
