Ancient Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings in Zhongnanmen, Tongren

The ancient buildings of Zhongnanmen in Tongren are located on both sides of Zhongshan Road and the eastern side of Dajiang North Road. Originally built in the early Ming Dynasty and expanded during the Qing Dynasty, most of the surviving structures date back to the Qing era. The Zhongnanmen historical complex covers an area of 11

0,000 square meters, with a construction area of 27,555

square meters, divided into eastern and western sections. The eastern part consists of temples, city walls, docks, and residential houses. The temples were built along the mountainside, while the residences used the river as a natural barrier, often featuring shops in front and living quarters at the back. These homes were enclosed by high walls and contained several inner courtyards. Most are traditional quadrangle dwellings, though some have a three-sided layout. Although they generally follow a symmetrical central axis, the main gates often face alleys rather than the main streets, adapting to the terrain. The Zhongnanmen architectural complex in Tongren is a seamless blend of ethnic minority culture and traditional Central Plains culture, serving as a tangible testament to the historical development of the Wuling Mountain region.
