Xiashang Ancient Town, once hailed as the “Little Shanghai” and praised as the “Pearl on the Qingshui River,” boasts picturesque scenery and a land of outstanding people. It is known as China’s hometown of red garlic, zinc-selenium rice, and the world-famous Xiashang dog breed. The world-class and Asia’s best canoe slalom base is also located here.

In the 13th year of the Jiaqing reign (1808 AD), Xiashang was established as a trading port. By the Republican era, it had developed into a bustling market with both water and land docks, serving as an important distribution hub for goods in central Guizhou. The town was teeming with merchants, caravan teams, shops, warehouses, guildhalls, and restaurants that operated day and night, earning it the reputation of the “Little Shanghai.” The West Bank Street still preserves the large and small stone-paved wharves built in the 44th year of the Qianlong reign (1779 AD), as well as ancient sites such as the Yuwang Palace, Guanyin Pavilion, historic temples, traditional residences, and ancient alleys. The Guanyin Pavilion, nestled halfway up Guanyin Mountain in Qingjiang Village and built along the mountainside, remains well-preserved to this day and is a popular site of worship. The tomb of Wu Chuansheng, a general who fought against Yuan Shikai during the National Protection War, is located at Baoyangzhou, just 1.5 kilometers from Xiashang.
