An ecological gallery, the Four-Dong Gully Scenic Area is 15 kilometers from the city center. The valley is serene and verdant, with waterfalls formed from gushing springs. Lush bamboo covers the mountainsides, red stone paths twist through the landscape, unique Danxia rocks stand proudly on the peaks, and the rich aroma of reddish-brown wormwood tea fills the air—creating a vibrant painting of mountain and water scenery. Experts from around the world praise the Four-Dong Gully as a “flawless scenic area,” a “delicate beauty,” and a “kingdom of bamboo.” Upon entering the Four-Dong Gully’s cascading waterfall cluster, you can admire the Water Curtain Cave Waterfall, where the falls hang like beaded curtains, thundering with tremendous force; the Moon Pond Waterfall, graceful as a curved silver comb; the Flying Frog Cliff Waterfall, which surges through massive rocks into a clear lake; and the 60-meter-high White Dragon Pool, where roaring waters create a misty spectacle. The area is shaded by bamboo, home to over 40 species across 8 genera, yielding delicious bamboo shoots, precious bamboo fungus, and wild bamboo partridges. Visitors enter through the Minxi Zui entrance of the scenic gully, cross the Ancient Path Bridge, walk along a secluded bamboo path, pass by the Five Longevity Turtles, and drink from the Longevity Turtle Spring. After walking one kilometer, you’ll reach the Blue Wave Pool in front of the First Dong Waterfall. Here unfolds a spectacular waterfall scene: a 37.5-meter-wide, 31-meter-high waterfall cascades like a silver curtain, with a natural stone cave hidden behind the falls. A stone path runs through the cave behind the waterfall, creating a marvelous “water curtain cave” view. The “miniature garden in the cave” adds even more wonder to the scene behind the falls.

In front of the Blue Wave Pool stand two massive rocks: one is called the “Sky-Gazing Rock,” the other the “Star-Observing Stone.”

Walking further up the cave, you can see the “Eagle and Pearl Painting” by the creek. A rock by the stream resembles an eagle, quietly watching over a pearl slowly rising from the water. Further along, you’ll pass through a canopy of swaying bamboo, gaze at the miniature garden in the water, cross a small brook, and find a “Guanyin Temple” under a banyan tree by the roadside.

One kilometer beyond the Second Dong, the creek features delightful sights like the “Miniature Garden in the Water,” “Turtle Rock,” “Coffin Rock,” and “Heavenly Book Rock.” Arriving at the Third Dong Waterfall, you’ll find the “Giant Frog Shower” at Swan Pool. Here, a rock sits on the sandy bank, flanked by silver waterfalls 26 meters high and 43 meters wide. Upstream lies a massive rock shaped like a charging bull, with a long, snake-like islet in the water before it, and a cliff resembling a frog even further ahead—as if the snake is chasing the frog. This forms the legend of “The Snake and Frog Playing in Water.”

Continuing onward, visitors can follow a winding path to admire forest tree ferns and rare trees, sparking boundless wonder and imagination. Ascend to view the “Spirit Official Temple” and appreciate the charm of the “Ancient Village Gate,” cross the Laojun Bridge, and pass through Golden Dragon Mountain toward Golden Palace Villa. Leaving the Third Dong, enjoy the beautiful scenery on both banks and observe the diverse aquatic plants in the creek, including miniature gardens in the water, such as the “Three-Legged Tree Fern” and “Double-Headed Tree Fern.”

Another kilometer ahead, the thunderous roar of water announces the Fourth Dong Waterfall—“Flying Dragon Falls”—in front of Little Dragon Pool. The waterfall is 60 meters high and 23 meters wide, cascading like a white dragon, shrouded in mist, with a roar that shakes the earth and stirs the soul.

Transportation

1. Self-driving: Drive to the Chishui Tourist Center (near the Datong Bridge over the Chishui River), then park your vehicle in the designated area. Free shuttle buses provided by the scenic area will take you to and from the site.

2. Scenic shuttle bus: Take the Chishui–Fuxing bus from Chishui Bus Station to the Tourist Center and transfer.

Datong Town: Located in the western part of Chishui City, Datong Town is 10 km from the city center and borders Hejiang County and Xuyong County in Sichuan Province, as well as Fuxing Town and Wenhua Subdistrict in Chishui. The town covers a total area of 105 square kilometers, comprising 25 villages, 1 subdistrict, 154 villager groups, 9 residential groups, 6,366 households, and 20,041 residents, including 765 households (2,121 people) and 190 Miao households (802 people).
