Located 17 kilometers from the urban area of Chishui City, Four Caves Gully is known for its waterfall cluster, as well as nearby attractions such as the Heavenly Bridge, the Immortal Crossing Bridge, the Qing Dynasty Filial Piety and Chastity Stone Archway. The area also includes the scenery of Liangcha River, Huaping Waterfall and Dan Rock, Dasha Gully Waterfall, Datong Ancient Town, and more. The gully features clear waters, tranquil valleys, bamboo-lined shores, lush forests, tall and graceful tree ferns, and winding red stone paths that cut through the bamboo along the streams and waterfalls, gradually drawing you deeper into the beautiful scenery.

You can drift along the stream, paddle a bamboo raft, take a small boat, or ride a sedan chair—whatever suits your mood. Along the roughly four-kilometer journey, you’ll find the First Cave’s Water Curtain Cave Waterfall, the Second Cave’s Moon Lake Waterfall, the Third Cave’s Flying Frog Cliff Waterfall, and the Fourth Cave’s Flying Dragon Pool Waterfall, all evenly spaced. Each waterfall displays its own unique character, whether majestic or graceful. The landscape is dotted with peculiar rocks and trees, vibrant flowers and plants, and charming scenes of small bridges, flowing water, and quaint houses that leave visitors lingering and lost in thought.

The Huaping Waterfall Cluster is a close neighbor to Four Caves Gully. It is said they are like two sisters—both graceful and gentle—but while the elder sister, Four Caves Gully, is more outgoing, the younger sister, Huaping, is shy and hides herself away. She only reveals herself when the endangered gorillas protecting the forest and trees are in danger, leaping out to rescue them in her haste.

Unprepared, she didn’t have a pool to land in like many other waterfalls. Instead, she landed on a flat Danxia rock. On this several-thousand-square-meter rock surface, she flows shallowly, her waters cascading over the red stone, shimmering with ripples as she unfolds all her tenderness.

Danxia rock caves are another wonder of the Four Caves Gully scenic area. With high, overhanging stone eaves, intact walls, dry ventilation, and bright, spacious interiors, fine mist-like or curtain-like waterfalls drip from the eaves. Outside the cave, green bamboo and shaded foliage bring coolness, while inside, the striking red rock walls cast a rosy glow over the bamboo grove, creating a true feeling of a hidden paradise or a celestial realm.

In the Four Caves Gully scenic area, there aren’t many jaw-dropping sights. The entire landscape appears so delicate, serene, simple, and affectionate—as if it knows nothing of affectation or showing off, much like a traditional Eastern woman.
