Mao Zedong's Former Residence is a classic red tourism attraction.

Mao Zedong's Former Residence is located in Xiashi Community, about 1 kilometer northwest of Houcang Town, facing the site of the Houcang Meeting across the river. It was originally the ancestral hall of the Fu family on Xiashi Street, built in the 59th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1720 AD), and is a large brick-and-wood quadrangle courtyard. Mao Zedong stayed here on December 31, 1934. The site now exhibits Mao’s living quarters, those of his guard Chen Changfeng, and has restored and displayed slogans left by the Red Army at the time, such as “Only the Soviet can save China, the Red Army is the army of workers and peasants.” Chen Changfeng, Mao’s guard, recalled in his memoirs: “This was the best house Chairman Mao had stayed in since the start of the Long March.” Harrison Salisbury, author of The Long March: The Untold Story, commented on the changes in Mao’s housing in Houcang: “This shows that Mao’s political status had risen significantly.”

The main hall of Mao Zedong's Former Residence features an exhibition on Mao’s life. The right wing displays the life stories of Leng Shaonong and Shu Baochu, early revolutionary figures from Weng’an who are regarded as red secret agents and martyrs, as well as General Chen Jing, a Red Army writer and poet. There is also information about the first peasant government and the first armed peasant group established by the Red Army in Weng’an during the Long March—the Tongzipo Peasant Association and guerrilla unit.
