Battle Site of Baiyan Pass

The Battle Site of Baiyan Pass is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhenfeng County and a classic red tourism attraction.

Baiyan Pass is located at the Yajia Pass, 7.5 kilometers east of the county town, built in the style of an ancient fortress, with the entire structure constructed from white cotton stone. The watchtower is 5.2 meters long and 4.3 meters high, the gate is 4.4 meters high and 2.3 meters wide, the threshold is about 0.2 meters high and wide, the arch lintel is 0.4 meters wide and 0.9 meters long. In the center, three large characters “Baiyan Pass” are inscribed horizontally in intaglio, to the right vertically in intaglio are the five characters “Guangxu Guimao Year,” and to the left vertically in intaglio are the nine characters “Constructed by Xu De, Magistrate of Zhenfeng Zhou.” On both sides of the pass, city walls were built along the mountain, with a total length of 75 meters, wall height of 1.6 meters, and thickness of 0.9 meters. There are more than ten crenellations on the wall ridges, spaced approximately 3 meters apart. On April 18, 1935, the Fifth Red Army Corps and the forward echelon of the Central Military Commission Column of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army had a brief encounter with the troops of Zhang Hongsheng from the Guizhou Army’s Chang Hesheng faction, which was stationed at Baiyan Pass at the time, resulting in casualties on both sides. Near the pass, there are several graves of Red Army soldiers who died in battle. Locals still refer to Baiyan Pass as the “Red Army Pass.” On November 2, 1987, the People's Government of Zhenfeng County designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.
