Zhenfeng Wenbi Pagoda

Zhenfeng Wenbi Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhenfeng County.

Wenbi Pagoda is located atop Tabeshan Hill, about 0.5 kilometers northwest of Zhenfeng County’s urban area. The pagoda is shaped like a writing brush, hence the name “Wenbi,” which means “writing brush.”

According to the Xingyi Prefecture Records from the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, the pagoda was built in the 24th year of the Daoguang era (1844). Standing 23 meters tall with seven stories, it is solid, tapers toward the top, and has an octagonal shape. The stones used in its construction were fitted tightly together without any bonding material, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. Despite over a century of weathering, no piece of paper can be inserted between the stone joints. On the southern side of the pagoda stands a stele inscribed with four large characters: “笔点青云” (The Brush Points to the Azure Clouds). The calligraphy style is a variation of Liu-style script, elegant yet vigorous.

In 1978, the pagoda was destroyed, leaving only half of it standing.

In 1987, the People’s Government of Zhenfeng County designated Wenbi Pagoda as a county-level cultural relic protection site. In 1993, the county government raised funds to restore it.
