Chengdu Campaign Memorial Hall

The Chengdu Campaign Memorial Hall is a national AA-level tourist attraction, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.

The Chengdu Campaign Memorial Hall is located in Tonggu Village, Xilai Ancient Town, Pujiang County, and has been officially designated as the “Sichuan Provincial National Defense Education Base” by the provincial government and the Sichuan Provincial National Defense Education Committee.

The cultural relics, photographs, books, and other materials prominently displayed in the Chengdu Campaign Memorial Hall use various mediums to present, from diverse angles and perspectives, a vivid, objective, and truthful record and reenactment of the heroic People’s Liberation Army’s campaign in the southwest, the decisive battle in western Sichuan, and the liberation of Chengdu.

In 2010, it was successfully rated as a national 2A-level tourist attraction and has become one of the well-known red tourism sites in Chengdu.

The Little-Known Chengdu Campaign

“Nowadays, many people think that Chengdu was liberated peacefully. The glorious yet tragic history of the Chengdu Campaign should be known to the world. It was fought and won through the bloody struggle and sacrifice of over 200,000 PLA soldiers, achieved at the cost of more than a thousand martyrs’ lives,” said Jing Hao, a veteran who has spent over a decade collecting and organizing historical materials and artifacts related to the Chengdu Campaign, hoping this history can inspire future generations.

In late December 1949, the 10th, 11th, 12th, 16th, and 18th Armies of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army encircled and divided the main force of Hu Zongnan—the Fifth Corps consisting of seven armies and over 50,000 troops—in the diamond-shaped area of Xinjin, Pujiang, Qionglai, and Dayi. After three days and nights of fierce fighting, the enemy forces were completely annihilated. Xilai Ancient Town in Pujiang served as the main battlefield of the Chengdu Campaign, blocking the enemy’s westward escape and playing a decisive role in the campaign’s victory. On December 27, the Chengdu Campaign concluded successfully. The PLA peacefully took over Chengdu, and Sichuan was liberated.
