Site of the Ancient Linxi County Town

The site of the ancient Linxi County town is a cultural relic protection unit of Pujiang County.

The site of the ancient Linxi County town is located in Group 12, Baima Village, Xilai Town, Pujiang County, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, in the second year of Emperor Gong of Western Wei (555 AD), Linxi County was established. At the end of the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty (756 AD), the "Xingxī Prefecture" was set up here, and in the fourth year of the Dali era (769 AD), Xīzhou was officially established, incorporating the two counties of Linxi and Pujiang from Qiongzhou into Xīzhou for 41 years. In the thirteenth year of the Zhenyuan era (797 AD), Tang forces recaptured Xīzhou and moved it back to Xichang City in Liangshan Prefecture. In the third year of the Taihe era (829 AD), the Nanzhao army captured Xīzhou, and in the fourth year of the Taihe era (830 AD), Xīzhou was moved back here again, still “with Pujiang and Linxi under Xīzhou.” In the sixth year of the Taihe era (832 AD), Xīzhou was relocated to Taicheng City (Lugou Town, Xide County, Liangshan Prefecture). In the fifth year of the Xining era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1072 AD) in February, the county was abolished and became Linxi Town. It served as a county town for 517 years, spanning eight dynasties: Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Former Shu, Later Tang, Later Shu, and Northern Song. By the end of the Ming Dynasty, the town was destroyed, leaving only a section of the northern city wall, 200 meters long, with remnants 4–5 meters high and a rammed earth base 5 meters thick. By the Qing Dynasty, the site had already been turned into farmland. Bricks, tiles, pottery, and porcelain fragments can be found everywhere. The protected area includes: the 200-meter section of the northern city wall, a 270-meter remnant in the east, a 250-meter remnant in the south, and a 250-meter remnant in the west. The entire ancient urban area is within the protected zone.

On October 9, 1982, the county government designated it as one of the first batch of county-level cultural relic protection units. This site provides physical materials for the study of Pujiang’s history.
