The Cloud Top Stone City Scenic Area is located 65 kilometers from downtown Chengdu. Originally built in 1243 by the Southern Song Dynasty general Yu Jie as a defensive fortress to resist the Mongolian army, the mountain stronghold features eight city gates, all constructed on steep cliffs. Most of the city is built along the mountain's natural ridges and cliffs, with stone walls filling in the gaps. The walls are equipped with crenellations and battlements. Within the city, there are 18 wells and 32 water pools. Perched high above, the fortress was easy to defend and hard to attack. Currently, around 5,000 square meters of historical structures remain, including the North Gate, the Changning Gate, and other ancient buildings. Today, Cloud Top Stone City has become a scenic area composed of Cloud Top Mountain and the “Little Three Gorges” of the Tuojiang River, covering a total area of 46 square kilometers. It is a provincial-level scenic and tourist area in Sichuan. This is the only surviving ancient fortress from the late Southern Song Dynasty’s resistance against the Yuan Dynasty in western Sichuan. The stunning green mountains and clear waters, combined with long-standing historical and cultural heritage, form a major highlight of the site, where the spirit of the Southern Song heroes lives on in the landscape.
