A Winter Encounter in Millennium Kyoto: Strolling Through World Heritage Sites

With a history spanning a thousand years, Kyoto boasts endless wonders to discover. Its beauty is found in its cultural relics and in the charm of the four seasons. Even if the dancing cherry blossoms of spring have won over travelers’ hearts, winter in Kyoto offers a special tranquility. Strolling through the remnants of the late feudal era and among world heritage sites, you can feel the profound harmony of nature and the enlightenment of mindfulness.

Every winter, Kyoto hosts a special event called the “Kyoto Winter Journey,” offering a refined and elegant experience unlike any other. This year’s event is in full swing and runs until March 22. In addition to access to normally off-limits cultural properties, there’s also the “Millennial Insights” activity where you can learn about Kyoto’s culture while traveling, as well as the “Gourmet Journey Through Kyoto” culinary event that showcases the region’s radiant food culture rooted in tradition.

This year marks the 44th edition of the “Kyoto Winter Journey.” The special opening of normally off-limits cultural properties includes a winter encounter with the late feudal era and world heritage sites. The itinerary, themed around the “Shogunate” and “World Heritage,” features 14 temples and buildings. Selected artworks—including gardens, fusuma paintings, and Buddhist statues—among first-class off-limits cultural properties will be displayed to the public during the event.

This special opening includes sites such as Kinshō-ji Temple, Sanmon Gate of Chion-in, Jōdo-ji Temple of Kiyomizu-dera, Taigetsu-an of Tōfuku-ji, Sōkō-in of Tōfuku-ji, the Gosho and Reimeiden of Sen'yō-ji, Shissui-in, Hōkyō-ji, the Shōtenkaku Museum at Shōkoku-ji, the Golden Hall and Relic Hall of Ninnaji, the Main Hall of Myōō-in, the Five-Story Pagoda and Shōkō-bō of Tō-ji, and the Relic Hall of Daigo-ji.

Visitors can take scheduled sightseeing buses to efficiently tour the themed stops. In addition to four routes themed “Beauty,” “Flavor,” “Elegance,” and “Tranquility,” there are six more routes to fully enjoy the winter event. There’s also the “Gourmet Journey Through Kyoto” activity, which highlights Kyoto cuisine and promotes the delicious flavors and distinctive “food culture” of Kyoto in winter. During the event, you can also experience the vibrant food culture of Kyoto, sustained by tradition.
