The Living Water Park is the world’s first comprehensive urban environmental education park. From its groundbreaking in the spring of 1997 to its initial completion, the project has received an investment of 30 million RMB. The attention the park has garnered from both domestic and international sources has been extraordinary from the very beginning.

On the southern bank of the Fuhe River lies this novel and distinctive Living Water Park, said to be the world’s first urban ecological environment park with water as its theme.

This section of the riverbank unfolds like terraced fields leading down to the water’s edge. Strands of green grass stubbornly poke through the cracks in the “fields,” weaving a flowing, jade-green “well” patterned carpet. The hillside is lush with green trees, bright flowers, and even a dense growth of cold ferns taller than a person, along with the creaking, leisurely turning of waterwheels—transporting visitors back to a primitive, rustic era... Water drawn from the Fuhe River sequentially flows through an anaerobic pond, flowing sculptures, a facultative pond, plant ponds, plant beds, and fish ponds—a water purification system that shifts from gentle trickles to dynamic cascades, presenting a rich variety of forms and undergoing qualitative changes, demonstrating to people the life process of water and nature transforming from “murky” to “clear” and from “dead” to “alive.” The park’s central garden features a sculptural fountain, natural ecological riverbanks, and the “Yellow Dragon Five-Colored Pond,” seamlessly blending with dozens of species of aquatic plants and ornamental fish. It combines education, sightseeing, and play, allowing visitors to fully experience the wonder and magic of nature as they get closer to and become one with it.

The Living Water Park is located along the Fuhe River in Chengdu and is the world’s first comprehensive urban environmental education park. Covering an area of over 24,000 square meters, water drawn from the Fuhe River sequentially flows through an anaerobic pond, flowing sculptures, a facultative pond, plant ponds, plant beds, and fish ponds, demonstrating the life process of water and nature transforming from “murky” to “clear” and from “dead” to “alive.” It is an internationally renowned successful case of environmental management. The park’s large-scale water treatment project has greatly improved the water quality of the Fuhe River, allowing citizens to witness firsthand the natural process of water turning from polluted to clean, and to take pride in it. Every day, 200 cubic meters of water are drawn from the river, purified of bacteria and heavy metals, and then returned. The shape of the park is that of a fish, symbolizing vitality and health, and has become one of the highlights of the design. Visitors often enter through the fish’s mouth and walk toward its tail. Meanwhile, walking along the riverbank also provides a perfect opportunity to stroll through the park and enjoy the full view. Upon entering the park, visitors first climb up the hillside to a circular plaza, which includes a pool and a teahouse. Rare native plants originally from Mount Emei—one of China’s four major Buddhist sacred mountains—are planted on the hillside, symbolizing the recreation of a sacred mountain landscape.
