Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque is a cultural tourism attraction.

Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque is located to the west of Tianfu Square, commonly referred to as Huangcheng Mosque. It earned its name due to its proximity to the ruins of a royal palace from a historical dynasty in the area, and it is the only religious site in the city currently open for worship activities.

Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque originally covered over ten acres. The current 7.7-acre site makes it the largest ancient mosque in Sichuan and also one of the more well-known ancient mosques in China.

According to records from the Ministry of the Interior of the Nationalist Government in 1936 (the 25th year of the Republic of China), the mosque’s immovable assets included 20 mosque buildings, 42 commercial storefronts, 7 courtyards of varying sizes, and fertile farmland totaling 96 acres across Pixian, Huayang, and Chengdu. Its wealth ranked first among the 13 mosques in Chengdu at the time.

Chengdu Huangcheng Mosque is located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It earned its name due to its proximity to the ruins of a royal palace from a historical dynasty in the area. It is the only religious site in the city center currently open for worship. In 1917, the mosque suffered severe damage during wartime. Although it was subsequently rebuilt, its scale was greatly reduced due to financial constraints. Its original area exceeded 6,600 square meters, later shrinking to just over 5,000 square meters. Nevertheless, it remains the largest mosque in Sichuan Province. Existing structures include a screen wall, main gate, second gate, corridor, ablution hall, scripture depository, and prayer hall. The screen wall faces the main gate across the street, with the gate adorned with a plaque reading “Huangcheng Mosque” and a fence outside; the second gate features a plaque inscribed with “The Ancient Religion of Heaven,” a relic from the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). The scripture depository houses numerous engraved Islamic scriptures in Arabic and Chinese. The prayer hall is a recent reconstruction, grand in scale yet preserving an ancient aesthetic. The mosque also serves as the headquarters of the Sichuan Islamic Association. During the construction of Tianfu Square, after repeated deliberations by experts and scholars organized by the municipal government, along with extensive input from residents and various sectors of society, the decision was ultimately made—after weighing all factors—to relocate Huangcheng Mosque.
