Doudi Chastity Archway

The Doudi Chastity Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Panzhihua City.

The Doudi Chastity Archway was originally built in the 17th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1837) and was initially made of wood before being destroyed. It was rebuilt as a stone archway in the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924). According to records, the archway was erected in honor of “Madam Mao, the mother of Zeng,” reflecting the strong local tradition of folk chastity and filial piety culture. The stone archway is made of yellow sandstone and features four pillars and three bays, measuring 6 meters in width and 9 meters in height, with the central and side bays being of similar height. Below the eaves of the central bay’s gateway is a stone plaque inscribed with calligraphy, flanked by carved inscriptions on both sides — one reading “Bamboo Joints and Pine Heart” and the other “Chastity Archway Shines Bright.” Other parts of the archway also feature finely crafted inscriptions and reliefs with rich content. Though not large in scale, the Doudi Chastity Archway has well-proportioned dimensions, a compact structure, and is currently in good condition, with clear inscriptions and carvings. The yellow stone archway appears even more rustic and dignified against the backdrop of towering ancient trees.
