Taiwan’s Top 10 Temple “Pilgrim Dormitories” – Accommodation Fees Depend Entirely on Your Generosity

Note: The accommodations listed below are arranged from north to central, then south to east. Please note that during peak seasons, some pilgrim dormitories may not accept individual travelers (or pilgrims), and most require advance reservations. Upon check-in, be sure to inquire in detail about the temple’s rules and regulations, and approach the experience with reverence to appreciate the kindness of the temple caretakers.

1. Baishatun Gongtian Temple, Miaoli

The Baishatun Gongtian Temple pilgrim dormitory in Miaoli, completed last spring after two years of construction, offers views of Cape Good Hope. It features group rooms, double rooms, and quadruple rooms to choose from, with the cheapest rate at just NT$200 per person. The dormitory has 15 suites and 11 group rooms. The surrounding area also has bike paths for leisurely exploration.

2. Dajia Zhenlan Temple, Taichung

Taichung’s Dajia Zhenlan Temple is reserved exclusively for pilgrims. For a cleaning fee of about NT$100 per person, you can stay here. Each room accommodates eight people with bunk beds and shared bathroom facilities. If there is an event at Zhenlan Temple, please check the official website for booking details.

3. Lukang Tianhou Temple, Changhua

The dormitory offers premium suites for two, four, six, and fifteen people. The double room costs NT$1,200, and the triple room NT$1,800. Each room has high-end bathrooms. There are also economy cubicles with shared bathrooms, accommodating up to 696 people at once. However, group rooms do not accept individual guests, only group bookings.

4. Beigang Chaotian Temple, Yunlin

Chaotian Temple offers options such as the Renhe Building, Housheng Building, and Zhongqiu Building. Accommodation fees are voluntary donations, and reservations are required several months in advance. Additionally, there are set meals for around NT$1,200–NT$1,500 per table available by reservation.

Covering an area of 7,000 pyeong, the “i? Pujie? Bao?” has 4 suites, namely Beiyuan, Zhongguan, and Nanyuan, which are three sections of a Minnan-style quadrangle inn for pilgrims. It includes a restaurant, meeting facilities, and accommodation areas. The place is very classic and traditional, yet offers modern suites that are simple and clean. The accommodation prices are donation-based. Walking in the garden, you often feel as if you’ve stepped into a time-travel drama.

VI. Tainan Luermen Madonna Temple

There are four-person twin rooms and eight-person dormitory rooms. Dormitory rooms are only available for group bookings, and each room only charges a nominal cleaning fee of NT$600 to NT$800 per day. The building features an imperial palace-style architecture resembling Beijing’s Forbidden City, with four sections, three courtyards, and five halls from south to north, making it very distinctive. It is said that the temple’s matchmaker deity is particularly efficacious.

VII. Kaohsiung Neimen Shunxian Temple

The six-star pilgrim building offers rooms equipped with hotel-like LCD TVs, wet and dry separated bathrooms, and Wi-Fi. Breakfast is made to order, and the accommodation fee is donation-based. There are various room types including double rooms, four-person rooms, and Japanese-style rooms.

VIII. Pingtung Checheng Fu’an Temple

Taiwan’s largest temple dedicated to the God of Wealth, this pilgrim building was constructed to accommodate the large number of worshippers. It is just a 30-minute drive from Kenting. There are double and four-person rooms available, costing about NT$1,500 per night.

IX. Hualien Cihui Shipi Chapel

Located in the suburbs of Hualien City, Cihui Shipi Chapel offers a tranquil environment with great views. The accommodation fee is donation-based, and it mainly offers dormitory-style rooms. You can check in directly upon on-site registration. The service is thoughtful, and there are also set meals with four dishes and one soup available for individual guests.

X. Hualien Gangtian Temple

Hualien Gangtian Temple is situated against the Central Mountain Range, offering a serene environment and fresh air. There are double rooms, four-person rooms, and dormitory rooms available. The average cost is about NT$100 to NT$250 per person, but group rooms are only available for group travelers, not for individuals.
