The Panzhihua China Third Front Construction Museum is a patriotic education base.

Panzhihua is a city born out of the Third Front Construction. It served as the leader, core, and successful model of the nation’s Third Front initiative. The grand and passionate Third Front Construction left an indelible fiery mark on Panzhihua and a rich and precious legacy of red history. In order to comprehensively reflect and showcase the magnificent history of the Republic’s “Prepare for war, prepare for famine, for the people; send the best people and horses to the Third Front,” and to promote the spirit of the Third Front Construction — “hard work, unity, selfless dedication, and courage to innovate” — the Panzhihua China Third Front Construction Museum was officially approved in 2010, completed and opened to the public on March 3, 2015. On April 11, 2016, it was officially named the “Panzhihua China Third Front Construction Museum” with approval from the General Office of the State Council. To date, the museum has received millions of visitors, including leaders at all levels from home and abroad, experts and scholars, veterans of the Third Front Construction from across the country, students, and other audiences, exerting a significant influence. It has become the “China Third Front Construction Research Base” and the “National Patriotic Education Base for Primary and Secondary Schools.”

The Panzhihua China Third Front Construction Museum is currently the largest museum in China dedicated to the Third Front theme, featuring the most comprehensive exhibits and the richest collection. The museum has gathered over 20,000 cultural relics (sets) and more than 20,000 images related to the Third Front Construction from the central government and 13 provinces and regions, including documents, photos, and artifacts from over 60 central leaders who personally visited the Third Front Construction sites. It has also collected over 120 high-definition oral history videos totaling more than 8,000 minutes from leaders, witnesses, and researchers involved in the Third Front Construction at national ministries, provincial, municipal, and enterprise levels, along with over 3,000 minutes of other video materials from the Third Front era. Additionally, the museum houses military artifacts such as tanks, artillery, and armored vehicles allocated by the PLA General Armament Department.

The exhibition at the Panzhihua China Third Front Construction Museum is divided into seven major sections: the historical background of the national Third Front Construction, the decision-making and launch by the Party Central Committee, the development of the Third Front Construction in 13 provinces and regions, the growth of key central and western cities and major projects driven by the Third Front Construction, the development and construction of Panzhihua — the cornerstone of the Third Front, the adjustment, transformation, and achievements of the Third Front Construction, and the inheritance of the Third Front spirit. It comprehensively presents the full picture of China’s Third Front Construction history, showcasing its historical significance and contemporary value from a global perspective, historical depth, and modern standpoint. It was recognized as an outstanding thematic exhibition in 2016 for “promoting excellent traditional culture and cultivating socialist core values.”

Our goal is to build the Panzhihua China Third Front Construction Museum into a resource hub for the Third Front Construction and a place for inheriting its spirit, making it a spiritual home for all builders and successors of the Third Front.
