Laojun Temple

Nestled among the verdant pines of Guangzhi Mountain lies an ancient temple — Laojun Temple. Built in the first year of the Jiaotai era of the Southern Tang Dynasty (958 AD), it is one of the oldest temples in the Shangdang region. The temple is dedicated to Laozi, the founder of Taoism, who is said to have forged Sun Wukong’s indestructible body and fiery golden eyes. In ancient times, Laojun Temple was a magnificent structure: a three-hall complex, each successive hall taller than the last. The main hall featured hanging beams, upturned eaves, and exquisitely carved and painted rafters. Unfortunately, due to years of neglect, only the dressing tower, theater stage, and a few side rooms remain today.
