Cliff Carvings at Nengren Temple

The cliff carvings at Nengren Temple are a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The cliff carvings at Nengren Temple are located at Nengren Temple in Zhongnong Township, about 45 kilometers east of Renshou County. The temple itself was destroyed long ago, but over a hundred niches of cliff carvings were once found on the rock faces on both sides behind the original temple site. In 1972, most of these carvings were severely damaged or destroyed during the construction of irrigation channels and stone quarrying for the Heilongtan Reservoir in Renshou. Today, only 28 niches remain, housing 270 statues. Except for most of the heads and hands being damaged, the rest are largely intact. They were discovered during a survey in 1982.

In May 2013, the cliff carvings at Nengren Temple were listed as part of the seventh group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Protected Area: To the east, 50 meters beyond niche No. 1; to the south, 15 meters beyond niche No. 13 to the drying ground; to the west, 50 meters beyond niche No. 27; to the north, extending from the northernmost carvings to the top of the rock face and then an additional 15 meters outward.

Construction Control Zone: An area extending 50 meters beyond the protected zone.
