Ziyang Huaxi Valley

Huaxi Valley originates in Zhongjiang County, flows through Jintang and Jianyang, and joins the Tuo River at Lianghekou in Baohe Town, Yanjiang District. It has a total length of 136.54 kilometers, with 34.4 kilometers of the river running within the territory of Yanjiang District. To date, 25 natural landscapes and 13 cultural heritage sites have been identified.

The section from Lianghekou in Baohe Town to Shuanghe Bridge in Laojun Town marks the lower reaches of the Huaxi River. Here, the river widens, the water remains calm, and both banks are shaded by lush trees and edged with emerald bamboo groves. The clear stream reflects the verdant surroundings, creating the unique spectacle of “mountains within the water, boats seemingly sailing atop the mountains.” From Diaoshui Bridge in Diaoyu Village, Baohe Town, passing through Heping Bridge to Sanhekou in Luojia Village, Zhonghe Town, this stretch is considered the essence of Huaxi Valley—truly a place where “green mountains and clear waters” are no exaggeration. The mountain slopes on both sides are part of the upper Yangtze River shelter forest, which has passed inspection by China’s Ministry of Forestry. In autumn, the forest explodes into a kaleidoscope of red, yellow, and green foliage, rivaling the vibrant colors of Jiuzhaigou. Beyond Sanhekou, the riverbed suddenly narrows to just over ten meters in width, with unfathomably deep waters. Massive rocks, some thirty to forty meters long and over ten meters wide, lie scattered across both riverbanks, jutting out in all directions, making small boat passage impossible. Towering cliffs rise two to three hundred meters high on either side, blanketed in dense forests and forming over four thousand meters of eerie and striking scenery along the Huaxi Valley.

Baohe Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Ziyang City. Established as Yanghua Township in 1909, it was renamed Baohe Township in 1940, became Baohe Town in 1951, later merged into Chongshan Township in 1955, converted to a commune in 1958, reinstated as a township in 1984, and re-established as a town in 1985. Located in the northern part of the city, it is 14 kilometers from the city government. Covering an area of 115.1 square kilometers, the town has a population of 64,000. The Ziyang–Lezhi highway runs through the town, and the Yanghua River is navigable.
