Huangjue Ancient Path

Huangjue Ancient Path is located on the northern side of Nanshan Mountain in Nan’an District, Chongqing, stretching from Shangxin Street to Huangjueya. It is an ancient stone-paved path known as “Laojun Slope” and is considered a local scenic attraction. The lower end of the path starts from two locations: one is on the left side of Qianqu Road on Shangxin Street, where a winding mid-sized road paved with bluestone slabs climbs along the slope. This road was a channel connecting Chongqing City to Longmen Port and also served as a main route leading to Sichuan and Guizhou; the other starts from Haitangxi, adjacent to Laojun Cave, featuring a steep stone stairway resembling a ladder to the clouds. These two paths converge at the entrance of Huangjueya Pass.

Huangjue Ancient Path was once a vital route for merchants traveling between Sichuan and Guizhou throughout the dynasties. Following the mountain’s contour, the bluestone path winds through the dense shade of Huangjue trees. Historical research indicates that this road originated during the Tang and Song dynasties, since when it has bustled with activity. The most scenic sections of Huangjue Ancient Path were also frequently traveled by historical figures, leaving behind numerous inscriptions and poems. During the Anti-Japanese War, some troops heading to Burma also passed through this ancient path, highlighting its significant role in transportation at the time. Before the opening of the Huanglong Highway, it was also an important link between downtown Chongqing and Huangjueya. Compared to other scenic spots in Chongqing, Huangjue Ancient Path offers a uniquely tranquil and picturesque experience. Strolling along the bluestone path, you’ll find centuries-old Huangjue trees lining both sides of the mountain trail, their gnarled branches and thick trunks casting cool shade. The stone path beneath, polished smooth by the footsteps of passersby over the years, shines gently. In spring, the path is lush and green, with tender buds brushing lightly against your body; in summer, the breeze flows freely, attracting crowds seeking shelter from the heat; in autumn, the ground is scattered with tree fruits, and the path is enveloped in seasonal hues as the mountains change color; in winter, withered leaves and withered grass are veiled in a misty veil, creating a naturally poetic ambiance.

Under the dense shade of the ancient Huangjue trees, you can enjoy views of the Yangtze River along the way, while across the river, Yuzhong District appears like a mirage shrouded in light mist, a truly spectacular sight. At dusk, gazing at the river illuminated by countless lights flowing majestically eastward is an indescribably beautiful experience. It can be said that the entire Huangjue Ancient Path serves as a vast, natural linear viewing platform. Among its features is a solitary peak, formerly known as Yangjia Mountain, which rises abruptly like a giant blade leaning against the foot of Nanshan Mountain. Climbing to the top of this peak, you can look back at the picturesque, wall-like peaks of Nanshan and gaze into the distance at the merging colors of river and sky, with the slender thread of the Sichuan-Guizhou Expressway below. Standing here, you’ll be struck by a profound sense of grandeur.
