A little over an hour’s drive from downtown Dongfang brings you to the Dagang Dam area, where the renowned Dagang Dam suddenly comes into view. Stretching more than 5.8 kilometers, the mighty dam stops the flow of the Changhua River in its tracks, while flocks of birds circle overhead, creating breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The Dagang Dam Scenic Area is well known for the Dagang Dam Reservoir and Power Station. As the second largest reservoir in Hainan, the Dagang Dam Reservoir covers a water surface area of 100 square kilometers. The scenic reservoir area boasts picturesque landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and rolling hills. The Dagang Dam Power Station is equally magnificent, with a dam nearly 6 kilometers long and standing 144 meters high, and an installed capacity of 240,000 kilowatts, making it the largest earth-rockfill dam in Asia. It is also home to the site of China’s earliest hydroelectric power station — a historical testament to Japan’s invasion of China and exploitation of its resources. Known as the “natural park” of Dongfang City, it has hosted many central government leaders and numerous domestic and international visitors. With highly favorable conditions for comprehensive tourism development, it offers great potential.

The predecessor of Guodian Hainan Dagang Dam Power Generation Co., Ltd. was Hainan Dagang Dam Hydropower Plant. The company’s completed project is the Hainan Dagang Dam Water Control Project, located in the Changhua River basin within Dongfang City, Hainan Province. This large-scale, multi-purpose project integrates power generation, irrigation, water supply, and tourism, and was the first key construction project in Hainan to be included in the national “Eighth Five-Year Plan.” The total investment for the project amounted to 2.1468 billion yuan. The dam, which spans the river, is 5,842 meters long, earning the title of the longest dam in Asia. On April 17, 1992, [Comrade] visited the Dagang Dam construction site and personally inscribed its name: Dagang Dam Hydropower Plant.

As the largest hydropower plant in Hainan, the Dagang Dam Power Plant plays a crucial role in the province’s power system by providing peak shaving, frequency regulation, and emergency backup. It plays a pivotal role in improving the quality of electricity in Hainan and ensuring the stable operation of the power grid. The social benefits generated after the completion of the project have been significant, greatly contributing to transforming the underdeveloped southwestern region of Hainan, developing the western Hainan industrial corridor, and fueling the economic takeoff of Hainan Special Economic Zone.
