Datian Slope Deer Reserve

Located 20 kilometers from Dongfang City and covering an area of 2,000 hectares, the reserve is home to more than 400 slope deer. Like the giant panda and golden snub-nosed monkey, the slope deer is a Class I nationally protected rare animal. It has a graceful build, resembling the spotted deer but with forward-curving antlers, making it well worth seeing. Slope deer are good runners and jumpers—when startled, they can leap over 5-meter-wide ravines and typically prefer to roam on grassy hillsides covered in shrubs. They have keen vision, hearing, and sense of smell. Male deer use vocalizations to attract mates, while females call their fawns—communication can be heard even when they are a kilometer apart.

Climbing to the watchtower in the reserve offers views of the deer at play. Slope deer are especially fond of the color red, so they often come out in groups around sunrise and sunset. This makes those times the best for tower viewing, and occasionally you might also spot other wild animals such as wild boars.
