Hainan Railway Museum

The Hainan Railway Museum is divided into an indoor exhibition hall and an outdoor display area. The indoor section showcases photos and historical documents illustrating the arduous pioneering efforts of Hainan’s railway management over the past 40 years. Meanwhile, the outdoor area includes the “Meiling” train car and a Romanian-made ND2 diesel locomotive, as well as a Japanese K3 ore car built in 1939, a Japanese crane truck from 1940, an S11 guard car manufactured in Wuhan in 1965, a coal grabber built in Qiqihar in 1970, a construction-type steam locomotive made by the Datong Locomotive Works in Shanxi in 1986, and various other precious railway relics.

The “Meiling” Presidential Train Car

The “Meiling” was once the private car of Chiang Kai-shek, the former leader of the Kuomintang, and earned its name because Soong Mei-ling, Chiang’s wife, frequently traveled in it.

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945 and Japan’s unconditional surrender, the then Nationalist government confiscated and repurposed it as an official vehicle. The “Meiling” was one such car. After the liberation, it was used inland and was transferred to Hainan from Guangzhou around the 1970s. It was later taken out of service due to poor technical condition and has been preserved to this day.

China’s First Domestic Mainline Locomotive

The construction-type steam locomotive with the number 6499 is China’s first independently designed mainline locomotive. With a total length of 29.18 meters, it was built in 1986 at the Datong Locomotive Works in Shanxi. It was once responsible for hauling both passenger and freight trains along the 214-kilometer route between Shilu and Sanya. It officially ceased operations in May 2003, becoming the last steam locomotive to retire from the Hainan railway, marking the end of the steam era on Hainan’s railways.

Bashuo Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Dongfang City and the seat of the municipal government. Established in 1957, it was restructured as a commune in 1958 and reinstated as a town in 1959. Located in the western part of the city, bordering the Beibu Gulf to the west, it covers an area of 52 square kilometers and has a population of 60,000, predominantly Han Chinese. National Highway 225 passes through the town. The railways from Bashuo to Sanya and from Shilu to Bashuo intersect here. The town administers three neighborhood committees—Donghai, Xingang, and Bashuo—and six village committees: Bashuo, Julong, Huangning, Pocao, Dagupo, and Fuyao.
