Guilin Yunfeng Temple

Guilin Yunfeng Temple is a cultural relic protection unit in Guilin.

Yunfeng Temple is a key cultural relic protection unit in Guilin, located at the southwestern foot of Elephant Trunk Hill in downtown Guilin. It is said that during the Tang Dynasty, there was once a Wenling Temple here. In the seventh year of the Jiading era of the Song Dynasty (1214), Fang Xinru built a study here and named it “Yunyaxuan.” During the Ming Dynasty, the “Fanfang Shrine” was constructed here to enshrine Fan Chengda and Fang Xinru. In the Qing Dynasty, it was changed into a temple named “Yunfeng Temple,” which was later converted into a nunnery called “Fuli Nunnery.” In the third year of the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty (1852), the Taiping Army laid siege to Guilin and set up their command post for the attack here. The original buildings were reconstructed or renovated in the third year of the Jiaqing era (1798), the tenth year of the Xianfeng era (1860), and the sixteenth year of the Guangxu era (1891). It was a three-courtyard brick-and-wood structure. The buildings were damaged during the War of Resistance Against Japan but were not completely destroyed.

In 1953, the government carried out repairs. In 1979, it was completely rebuilt as a pseudo-classical structure made of reinforced concrete, featuring two stories, three courtyards, and five bays, with arched gables, vermilion pillars, beams, and window frames, and emerald-green glazed tiles. It has been turned into the Yunfeng Temple Exhibition Hall, where exhibitions such as “The Taiping Rebellion in Guilin,” “Ming and Qing Porcelain and Paintings of Guilin,” “Cultural Relics Unearthed in Guilin,” “The 1911 Revolution in Guilin,” and “Li Zongren in Guilin” have been held.
