Just one week away from the end of 2013, the highly anticipated Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve fireworks show is about to light up the sky. The Taipei City Department of Public Works has specially recommended hiking trails in the outskirts of Taipei, inviting netizens to enjoy the romantic 101 fireworks display with their loved ones and welcome the happier “Year of the Horse 2014” together.

Huang Liyuan, head of the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, said that Xiangshan and Hushan Trails in Xinyi District, located in the Four Beasts Mountain area near Taipei 101, offer prime views and geographical advantages, along with well-developed trail facilities. These have always been among the most popular spots for the public to enjoy the New Year’s Eve fireworks. The Department of Geotechnical Engineering has carefully selected 11 viewing locations including Xiangshan Trail and Hushan Trail, offering the public multiple options—no need to crowd in the city or worry about being too close to see the full spectacle. Enjoy the dazzling fireworks safely and healthily.

Xia Xiantong, head of the Roads and Trails Division of the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, said that those worried about waiting for the countdown getting boring can first take the romantic “Hello Kitty” cable car up to Maokong in Wenshan District to enjoy the night view and tea with family and friends, then head to the four recommended prime viewing spots by the department to watch the fireworks. Among them, the newly completed “Viewing Platform on the Elevated Trail,” located on a small hill next to Mingde Temple on Laoquan Street, is about a 30-minute walk from the Maokong Cable Car Station. Passing through cherry blossom tree-lined paths on both sides of the trail, you can reach the elevated spot in just a few minutes to take in the vast, beautiful night scenery and mesmerizing fireworks.

If you want to get away from the city center and take in the entire view of the Taipei Basin, He Mingyu, head of the Forest Recreation Division of the Department of Geotechnical Engineering, said there are four major attractions: the three scenic areas of Yuanshan, Zhinan, and Xianji Rock in Taipei, as well as Jianan Butterfly Garden near the Miramar Ferris Wheel. These destinations are easily accessible via convenient MRT connections.

Wondering where these spots are? The Taipei City Department of Geotechnical Engineering offers free “Hiking Trail Route Maps” or they can be downloaded from the department’s official website under the “Mountain Hiking Trails” theme page. Additionally, the department kindly reminds everyone that it gets windy at night in the mountains, so remember to dress warmly, walk steadily and slowly, and help maintain the cleanliness of the trails and order during the fireworks display. Please avoid letting personal photography equipment obstruct other people’s passage or views.
