Ronghu and Shanhhu Lakes Scenic Area

Ronghu Lake and Shanhhu Lake were originally named Jianhu, Yangtang, and Yangqiao Tang. They are located in the middle section of Zhongshan Middle Road in downtown Guilin, on both sides of Yangqiao Bridge. The Ronghu and Shanhhu Lakes Scenic Area consists of two interconnected lakes that form a "heart-linked" body of water. Divided by Yangqiao Bridge, the eastern part is Shanhhu Lake, and the western part is Ronghu Lake, named after the banyan and fir trees growing along their shores. The two lakes are often referred to together as Ronghu and Shanhhu Lakes.

Since the Qing Dynasty, wealthy gentry and scholars have built residences along the lakeshores. Today, most of these former homes have disappeared, with only the former residence of Li Zongren and Gui Mansion remaining. Beidou Bridge is located in Ronghu Lake, connecting the lake’s central island to the east and the Ancient South Gate to the west. Its layout follows the pattern of the Big Dipper, hence its name. The railings of the bridge are entirely made of high-grade Fangshan white marble, making it the longest white marble bridge in Guangxi.

The Sun and Moon Twin Towers are situated in Shanhhu Lake. The Sun Tower is a copper tower located in the center of the lake. The two towers are connected by an 18-meter-long underwater aquarium. All components of the copper tower—including the tower spire, roof tiles, upturned eaves, arches, brackets, doors, windows, columns, beams, ceiling, and floor—are forged from steel and adorned with exquisite copper murals. The copper tower holds three world records: the world’s tallest copper tower, the world’s tallest copper structure, and the world’s tallest tower over water. The Sun and Moon Twin Towers are one of the key highlights of Guilin’s Two Rivers and Four Lakes night scenery.
