Huanjiang Wenya Tiankeng

Wenya Tiankeng is located in Wenya Village, Luoyang Town, Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, Guangxi, 52 kilometers from the county seat. It is connected to the outside world via a 12-kilometer fourth-grade sandy road through Huashan in Luoyang Town. The Wenya Tiankeng was referred to by experts from the 22nd Sino-British expedition as China’s second-largest tiankeng cluster. Among them, the Ge’ai Tiankeng has a diameter of about 500 meters and a depth of about 400 meters, resembling the gaping mouth of a roaring beast. Looking down into the tiankeng, the vegetation is lush and shrouded in mist, surrounded by towering, continuous mountains. What makes the Luoyang Tiankeng unique is that within one tiankeng cluster, there are four large tiankengs, with tall primeval forests growing at the bottom and interconnected underground passages.

Many plant species—up to a thousand—have been found in the humid, primitive forests at the bottom of the tiankengs. Entering through cave entrances at the base, two underground rivers converge. By the light, golden sands can be seen along the riverbanks, along with uniquely shaped, beautifully patterned pebbles. The water in the rivers is crystal clear, teeming with fish. The Sino-British joint expedition surveyed 19 underground rivers and caves in the tiankengs, with a total length of nearly 10 kilometers and shaft depths of nearly 1,000 meters. They discovered grand cave systems, with uniquely developed stalactites inside—including massive stalagmites, stalactites, stone waterfalls, and draperies in a variety of forms, all crystal clear—like a vast treasure trove. The underground rivers in the caves feature rapid currents, which are truly astonishing.

Currently, the wonders of the Huanjiang Tiankeng cluster and its underground cave rivers are still awaiting further exploration by relevant departments and experts. The People's Government of Huanjiang County has established a protected area at the site of the tiankeng cluster, and these beautiful tiankengs are waiting for people to uncover their mysteries.
