Foreigners love autumn trips to Japan, with Fukuoka being a top choice

Foreign travelers love Fukuoka a lot. In autumn, Fukuoka is highly favored by tourists, with statistics showing a year-on-year growth rate of 219.7%, ranking first. Okinawa Prefecture in the south and Gifu Prefecture in central Japan follow closely behind. The growth rate in Fukuoka Prefecture is mainly due to areas such as Hakata and yG Garden in Fukuoka City, as well as Kaihin-ko, Dazaifu, and Nishitetsu areas, which have maintained the summer tourism boom and driven up overall visitor rates. Okinawa Prefecture attracts visitors to its resort atmosphere with its offshore islands such as Miyako Island and Irabu Island.

In addition to strong growth in local areas, in terms of overall visitor popularity across Japan, the Tokyo metropolitan area still ranks first in visitation rates.
 

Top five regions visited by fall tourists to Japan

Local governments across Japan have launched various promotional strategies to boost tourism. Hiroshima Prefecture, which saw a year-on-year growth of 72.4%, has attracted attention since surpassing one million visitors for the first time in 2015. Topics driving interest include U.S. President Obama’s visit in May this year, the launch of cruise tours in June, and the 20th anniversary of World Heritage inscription in December.
