Thank you, Taiwan — In return for 311 disaster relief, six prefectures in Japan’s Tohoku region host a gratitude festival in Taiwan

Three years ago, the Tohoku region of Japan was hit by the devastating 311 disaster. The tremendous support — both in goods and financial aid — from the people of Taiwan touched the hearts of the Japanese. Now, the Tohoku region has come to Taiwan to express their gratitude in action. From now until December 22, the “Six Prefectures of Japan’s Tohoku Region Gratitude Festival” will be held at the Flower Expo venue. A total of 150 people have come to Taiwan to thank the Taiwanese people, with booths set up for visitors to explore and learn more.

At the “Six Prefectures of Japan’s Tohoku Region Gratitude Festival,” the characteristics of Tohoku are presented through five major theme pavilions: Snowy Cherry Blossoms, Fiery Festivals, TV & Movie Locations, Summer & Autumn Scenery, and Cultural Experiences. The theme pavilions recreate Tohoku scenes with large backdrops, and offer various cosplay experiences where visitors can dress up as Amachan, ancient samurai, or in special festival costumes. There’s also a chance to try DIY traditional crafts.

The main stage will feature a mini concert by RAKE, Japan’s Tohoku goodwill ambassador, along with performances by singers from various regions. Festival performances include well-known Taiwanese favorites such as Akita’s Namahage Taiko, Morioka Sansa Odori, Fukushima Team, and Japanese Children’s Taiko, as well as fun competitions like the Iwate Traditional Soba Noodle Bowl Race. There will also be appearances by popular Japanese mascot characters.

In a specially created “Thank You, Taiwan” section, the Tohoku region expresses gratitude to Taiwan’s aviation industry for standing by them after 311. A special aviation promotion area has been set up, along with exhibition zones from various prefectures and a photo booth featuring local specialties and food. All are available for visitors to explore and experience. Those interested are encouraged to visit during the holiday weekend.
