Liu Sanjie Film and Television City is situated on the picturesque banks of the Longjiang River in Beihao Village, Mashan Township, Liucheng County, and is divided into three sections: the Mo Mansion, Liucheng Street, and the Liu Family Compound. The Mo Mansion is built at the foot of Guanmao Mountain, a hill steeped in fascinating legends, and includes 30 components such as the main gate, central hall, main residence, corridors, watchtower, young master’s room, servants’ rooms, and a rear garden. It features the traditional stilt-style construction of the Zhuang people, with mortise-and-tenon joined rows, and an artful arrangement of pavilions, corridors, and towers. The Liu Family Compound is built on a small island in the river, facing the Mo Mansion across the water.

This film and television city served as the main shooting location for the TV series Liu Sanjie, jointly produced by Liuzhou City and the TV Drama Production Center of China Central Television. In the series, the role of “Liu Sanjie” was played by the renowned actress Shu Chang, who has starred in numerous films and TV dramas in recent years, including Golden Powder Family, Lotus Lantern, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, and The Deer and the Cauldron. Most of the drama’s scenes were filmed here.

Legend has it that Liu Sanjie, the “Song Fairy” of the Zhuang ethnic group, fled from the oppression of a local tyrant and traveled southward along the Longjiang River by boat from Yizhou to Liuzhou. When she passed through Beihao Village in Liucheng, she was deeply captivated by the area’s unique and breathtaking scenery. She and her brother Liu Er stayed there for half a year. During the day, Sanjie worked alongside the villagers, and at night, she taught them songs. Through her singing, she gave voice to the hearts of the poor and expressed her own aspirations, deeply moving the local people. Later, the island where Sanjie often sang with the villagers came to be known by locals as “Duige Island” (the Singing-Back-and-Forth Island).

Today, Shangzhou Island remains a place where the Zhuang people of Liucheng sing traditional songs. When you stand on the island, surrounded by green mountains and clear waters, whether gazing at the distant peaks, watching the mist rise in the rain, observing the peculiar rocks in the river, or admiring the sunset at dusk, you can’t help but be awed by the choice Liu Sanjie made all those years ago...
