Located in the western part of the Liaoxi Corridor and boasting a high forest coverage rate, Beidaihe is not only a paradise for many resident and summer migratory birds but also an ideal passageway and resting spot for numerous migratory birds.

The bird resources in Beidaihe are extremely rich. According to relevant data, there are a total of 1,186 bird species in China, and Beidaihe has 405 species from 61 families across 20 orders. Among them, 68 species are under national key protection, and many are world-renowned rare birds. As early as the beginning of the last century, ornithologists from the United States, Germany, and other countries came to study the bird resources and wrote monographs. In recent years, numerous bird research professionals and enthusiasts from the UK, the US, Japan, Denmark, Belgium, Australia, and other countries have flocked here to conduct academic research and engage in birdwatching activities. Experts consider Beidaihe to be one of the best bases for birdwatching and avian research. To effectively protect and develop bird resources, the local government has approved the establishment of the Beidaihe Bird Nature Reserve and founded the Bird Protection Association.

The best seasons for birdwatching in Beidaihe are from mid-March to late May and from early September to mid-November. Rare bird sightings can also occur during other months.

Starting in June, as summer begins, some birds breed locally, such as the Chinese Pond Heron, Yellow Bittern, Eurasian Coot, Hoopoe, Red-rumped Swallow, Black-headed Grosbeak, and Black-naped Oriole. At this time, on the beaches of Beidaihe, you can not only listen to the harmonious sounds of pine waves and the sea, but also hear the loud, continuous singing of orioles in many trees throughout the day. In the early morning and evening, you can also see groups of red-rumped swallows flying in threes and fours, working twelve hours a day to search for food.

In July, large numbers of sandpipers and snipes continue their migration. At this time, the azure sea surface of Beidaihe is dotted with dozens of White-winged Terns soaring gracefully, creating a moving scene.

In August, a wide variety of sandpipers and snipes continue to pour into the mudflats, estuaries, and bays of Beidaihe. By mid-month, Red-rumped Swallows move southward, while swifts sometimes fly low and sometimes soar high. Especially during light drizzle, when most birds tend to hurry back to their nests or find shelter, Red-rumped Swallows remain active despite the light rain. After mid-month, a small number of raptors and many species of songbirds pass through the Beidaihe area.
