Located in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, China, an architectural structure dubbed the world’s loneliest library went viral among Chinese netizens. This simple and unadorned standalone building stands by the sea, facing the ocean and listening to the waves, exuding an atmosphere as if one has reached the end of the world, radiating a solitary and detached loneliness.

This loneliest library in the city is the Sanlian Bookstore Seaside Public Library, situated in Nandaihe (Beidaihe New Area), Qinhuangdao, Hebei. It covers an area of 450 square meters. There’s no shortcut to getting here—you have to park your car some distance away and walk step by step across several hundred meters of sandy beach to reach it. Architect Dong Gong said that upon first arriving at this place, he felt a profound sense of solitude. The endless ocean and the extremely open background make every element feel so intense, which is why Dong Gong hoped this library would stand firmly on the beach like a rock, creating a powerful presence.
