In the early morning of May 25, two young men went hiking in Qinhuangdao’s Dongshan Park. Instead of taking the designated trails, they decided to take a shortcut and climb up along a steep cliff. As a result, they got stuck halfway up the mountain, unable to go up or down, and had to call the police for help.
At 6:30 a.m., five firefighters from the Changli Squadron of the Qinhuangdao Fire Brigade quickly arrived at the scene. They found the two trapped individuals standing on a bare rock halfway up the mountain. The rocks above and below were both smooth and steep, making it impossible for them to climb either way. The squadron leader immediately led two experienced rescue soldiers, carrying rescue ropes, to climb up the mountain. Their plan was to reach a flat area above the trapped men that had a path, then pull the two men up to the flat ground before descending via an easier trail.
After climbing to the pre-selected flat area, the rescuers tied the two rescue ropes they had brought to a thick tree on the mountain and then threw them down to the trapped men, instructing them to hold on. To ensure the trapped individuals wouldn’t slip while climbing up, the firefighters guided them to tie another rescue rope around their waists. The firefighters then pulled from above to help the men ascend. After 40 minutes of persistent effort, the two trapped men were successfully freed.
Reminder: Every hiking season, incidents of hikers getting trapped due to seeking thrills by taking unconventional routes are all too common. Such risky behavior not only endangers the hikers themselves but also poses significant challenges for rescue teams due to the treacherous terrain. Visitors are advised to think twice before venturing off the beaten path.
