Aojiao Fort

Aojiao Fort is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

Aojiao Fort is located in the northwest of Aojiao Village, Shenquan Town, about twenty li south of Huidong County. It lies five li east of Xidong Fort and five li west of Shenquan Fort. Built in the 56th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1717) to defend against Japanese pirates, it was equipped with six cannons, seven barracks, one specially assigned officer, and eighteen gunners.

The fort faces east toward the sea. Its perimeter was constructed with lime-mortared rammed earth, featuring battlements, gun ports, and a walkway. The walls are 5.8 meters high and 2 meters thick, with a 1.3-meter-wide walkway, covering a total area of 312 square meters. The surrounding structure remains well-preserved to this day.

In 2012, the People's Government of Guangdong Province designated it as part of the seventh batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Aojiao Village: Aojiao Administrative Village

Located 9.8 kilometers south of Huidong County and one kilometer southeast of Shenquan Port, on a cape. It has a population of 6,900. During the Song Dynasty, residents with the surnames Cai, Xu, and Jiang settled here. The village is situated against the mountain and facing the sea, located on a cape with a terrain resembling a phoenix, hence the original name Fengshan (Phoenix Mountain). Later, when the Huang family moved in, it was also called Xianghuang Ao (Fragrant Yellow Cove) because of a large reef in the bay in front of the village that resembled a citron (known locally as “huang”). In the 14th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1586 AD), it was renamed to its current name due to its location at the cape of a bay.
