Linyu Tower in Shanhaiguan

According to the *Annals of Shanhaiguan*: “Linyu Tower is located at the junction of the eastern city wall and the northern corner of the East Luocheng (East Outer City), built in the 12th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1584). As the East Luocheng was constructed to connect with the main pass city, precautions were taken against unforeseen events, hence this tower was erected and troops stationed there.”

Built concurrently with the East Luocheng, Linyu Tower served as a defensive structure protecting the Shanhaiguan fortress. It gradually fell into disuse after the Qing Dynasty.

In 1985, the relevant state authorities allocated special funds for its restoration, which was completed in 1986.

The restored Linyu Tower is situated on a rectangular city platform. The platform is 25 meters wide and 10 meters high. The tower itself covers a floor area of 119.52 square meters. It features a single-eave, five-ridged hip-and-gable roof, with a double-layered brick-and-timber structure. The east, north, and south sides of the tower are fitted with 20 arrow slits.
