The Former Site of the Headquarters of the Third Division of the Southern Expeditionary Force of the Nanchang Uprising is a cultural relic protection unit of Chaozhou City.

The “August 1st” Nanchang Uprising Southern Expeditionary Force Third Division Headquarters Site in Chaozhou is located at Hanbi Lou in West Lake Park, Chaozhou. The building was constructed in 1922 as a two-story Western-style structure made of reinforced concrete, with a floor area of over 400 square meters. It was destroyed by Japanese invaders during the Anti-Japanese War. In 1964, it was rebuilt to its original appearance. The plaque above the entrance, inscribed with the three Chinese characters “Hanbi Lou” (literally “Lotus Green Tower”), was calligraphed by Guo Moruo.

In 1927, Zhou Enlai, He Long, Zhu De, Ye Ting, Liu Bocheng, and others led the Nanchang Uprising troops advancing toward Guangdong. On September 23, they entered Chaozhou, occupying the enemy’s police station and key Kuomintang offices, freeing prisoners from jail, and releasing political detainees. At that time, the headquarters of the Third Division under He Long’s command was stationed at Hanbi Lou. Division commander Zhou Yiqun and others directed battles here, established the Chaozhou United Government of Workers, Peasants, Soldiers, Students, and Merchants, punished reactionary elements, and held mass rallies in West Lake Square, where Red Guards from various areas came to join forces.
