Runfeng Tower

There are as many as 655 tulou (earthen building) villages in Raoping County, and Runfeng Tower is one of the larger and more distinctive ones. Located in Fenglian Village, Xinfeng Town, Raoping County, Runfeng Tower backs onto “Beitou Mountain” (west of Provincial Highway Baifeng Line). Built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, the tower is circular in shape, facing south with its back to the north, covering an area of 1,846 square meters, with a diameter of 48.5 meters, a circumference of 152.5 meters, and a height of 10.52 meters. It has two and a half floors, a two-courtyard layout with a central courtyard, and the entire structure was built from compacted yellow earth, coated externally with shell lime. The tower contains 29 housing units, one communal well, and features an octagonal courtyard plaza in the center. Surrounding the tower are additional structures including the Sima Mansion, Rulin Mansion, Tiaoqin Studio, and Guangye Pavilion. Compact in design and exquisitely built, the tower is relatively well preserved today.
